Welcome to a new school year at Kawananakoa Middle School!
In our continuing effort to encourage communication between our
families and school, we have created the KMS Update which is an
email that will be sent directly to you every Friday afternoon with
important alerts, handy reminders and updates to keep you informed
and connected to our school.

WELCOME NEW INTERIM PRINCIPAL
It is with great pleasure that we welcome Mrs. Maureen Dunn who
will be guiding our school until a permanent principal is selected.
After 40 years of dedicated DOE service, former principal, Mrs. Sugibayashi
is now enjoying a well deserved retirement. Warmest mahalo to both
Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Sugibayashi.

Your child received an Open House 2018 Aud informational flyer (bright orange)
in AA today. Please have your child complete the Student Schedule
portion (backside of flyer) and make sure to bring it to the Open House.

Please be advised that a few teachers are unable to attend Open House,
but handouts will be available in the cafeteria for most of those classes.

ation). Complete a membership form and help support Kawananakoa

FREE AND REDUCED PRICE SCHOOL MEALS
The National School Lunch program is a federally assisted program
based on family income eligibility which provides free or reduced
price student meals. Student who had meal benefits last school
year, must reapply for the current school year.
Parents/guardians may submit applications online at ezmealapp.com
and enter “Hawaii” to search for school district.
You may also pick up a paper application from our school main office
(Bldg A, 2nd floor). Processing deadline of applications is September 18,
so submit you applications early and allow at least ten (10) working days
WHAT’S COOKIN’ AT KMS? – August Breakfast and Lunch menus
Mr. Abille, KMS Cafeteria Manager, and his staff have some great meals
planned for August along with healthy snacks that are available for
purchase during recess.
PLEASE TURN IN NOW TO AA
The Parent-Student-School Compact which was distributed to all
students on August 7, is due immediately. Parents should read, sign
the form and then have your child return it to their AA teacher now.
CALLING ALL ROAD WARRIORS! Boys and girls cross country practice
begins on Monday, August 13, from 3:00 to 4:00 pm. Please meet under
the big tree near the school auditorium. Please see Mr. Flatt in H202 to ask
questions and to sign up.
STUDENT ID (on CLIP or LANYARD) IS REQUIRED
Students must wear their KMS ID on a lanyard or clip at all times during
school hours. The visible student ID helps ensure that only authorized
students are on our campus and is part of our school’s effort to keep our
Lost or damaged IDs must be replaced and can be purchased for $5.00
in the main office (Bldg A, 2nd floor). Replacement clips or lanyards can
be purchased for $1.00. Students who forget to bring their IDs to
school should request a temporary ID from the school office before

ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM OUR KMS PTSA:
PTSA dry-fit t-shirt sale – These shirts are recognized as an approved
alternative to the school cotton t-shirt uniform. Order forms and
payments are due on Thursday, August 16.
PTSA fall fundraiser – Coming soon! Please be on the look out for
a PTSA packet (brown envelope) in your child’s school bag!
