FREE AND REDUCED PRICE SCHOOL MEALS
The National School Lunch program is a federally assisted program
based on family income eligibility which provides free or reduced
price student meals. Parents of student who had meal benefits
last school year, must reapply for the current school year now
or your child will no longer be eligible for this service.
Parents/guardians may submit applications online at ezmealapp.com
and enter “Hawaii” to search for school district. The deadline for
online applications is Sept 18.
You may also pick up a paper application from our school main office
(Bldg A, 2nd floor). Last day to submit paper applications is Sept 14.
Please don’t delay – late applications cannot be accepted.
FEDERAL SURVEY FORMS DUE NOW – Required for Maximum Funding
On Wednesday, September 5, your child received a US Dept of Education
Federal Survey Form. KMS is striving for 100% completion and return of
all forms by our families so that our school can receive much needed
maximum federal funding.
Parents should carefully complete and sign the Federal Survey immediately
and have your child return it to their AA class. If your child did not bring
home a form, please have them come up to the main office (A bldg, 2nd
floor) to pick up another form. If you need assistance in completing the
form, please contact our school main office at (808) 307-0300.
Tips for proper completion of the form:
1. Please complete the survey using blue or black ink (or typewritten).
2. Please write street number and street name for all addresses on
survey. Do not list PO Box information.
3. Under Name of Employer, the company name needs to be listed
(Example: “construction” is not acceptable for name of employer).
If not employed, you may write N/A. If self-employed, please enter
name of company or your name.
4. Address of Employer (Job Location) must be a street address (not
P. O. Box). If parent works on a federal property, please write complete
street address and building number.
5. Legal parent/guardian must sign and date the bottom of survey.
6. Please return completed and signed survey to your child’s AA teacher now.

TRIPOD SURVEY LETTER AND DECLINATION FORM
On Friday, August 31, your child received a Tripod Survey informational
letter and Declination Form in AA class. The Tripod Survey allows students
to share their perceptions about their learning experiences within their
classrooms and school. Research shows that the Tripod Student Perception
Survey results are highly correlated with student achievement in school.
If you choose not to have your child participate, please complete the
Declination (to “opt-out”) form and have your child return it to AA class
as soon as possible. Please open the attachments below to read the letter
and print the declination form. Translations in Chinese, Chuukese and
Marshallese have been provided.
Students will celebrate Spirit Week, 9/10 through 9/14 by donning
special fun attire for the designated days:Mon – Squad Day – Gather your friends for a look-alike group. The
whole squad must check in at K103 before school begins, to
get a wristband that indicates that they are participating in this
Tue – Nerds vs. Jocks Day – Are you bow ties or sports jersey?
Wed – School Colors Day – Wear your red, black and gold proudly.
Thu – Pajama Day – Bring your favorite bedtime stuffed animals and
Fri – Dress ’80s Day – Is that really how grandma and grandpa dressed?
Please remind your child that these special dress days are a privilege
that should not be abused. Although the KMS uniform t-shirt will not
be required on these special dress days, the standard dress code still
applies (see page 14 of the Student Planner).
Students should also make sure to wear and have their KMS student ID
visible at all times.
MESSAGE FROM OUR REGISTRAR – Infinite Campus (IC)
Students and parents who have logged into Infinite Campus before
should have the ability to reset their passwords themselves. Part of
the initial login process requests an email address from the student
or parent. If needed, IC forwards instructions to that email address
to reset that person’s login info.
If a student is still unable to reset their password themselves or is
locked out from IC (too many failed login attempts), they may come
and see me during non-instructional time (recess, AA, before/after
school). Parents may submit a request to me for assistance at:

JOIN SPEECH TEAM!
Throughout the month of September, the KMS Speech Team invites
students to join them every Wednesday in the J Building Workroom
from 2:05 to 3:30 p.m. Experience is not necessary. Students from all
grade levels are welcome. Events include: Storytelling, Duo Interpretation
(acting), Program Reading, Impromptu Speaking, and Original Oratory.

KMS PTSA is organizing and recruiting parent and student volunteers to
help with the upcoming:

Each student received an informational flyer and sign up sheet in their
AA class. Please ask you child to share it with you or open the attachment
Please note that there will also be a prep day on Friday, Sept 28, from
3:30 pm to 5:00 pm, to pressure wash the areas that will be painted on
Saturday. If you have a pressure washer that the PTSA may borrow, please
contact the PTSA (see below).

MORE REMINDERS FROM YOUR KMS PTSA
- Fall Donation Drive – In order to continue to grow PTSA’s support of
KMS school programs, PTSA asks for your donations.
Fall Donation Drive packets were distributed to all students this week.
If you are able to contribute, please submit cash/check (checks payable
to “Kawananakoa Midddle School PTSA”), with your donation form, and
return it in the brown manila envelope, with your child’s name and AA
room number, to the school’s main office (Bldg A, 2nd floor) or AA class.

- Thirsty Thursdays! – A thirst-quenching fundraising event organized
by KMS PTSA. Teapresso will be on campus on Thursday, September 13
from 2:25 pm to 3:30 pm, next to the cafeteria, to sell cool and delicious
milk tea, honeydew tea, strawberry/lilikoi lemonade boba and rainbow jelly.
- Dri-Fit Shirts – Thank you for your orders. Shirts will be distributed
to the students’ AA classes in mid-September.

A MESSAGE FROM KMS BAND BOOSTER CLUB – Foodland Maika’i Card
Please support the KMS Band Booster Club by designating it for a donation
whenever using your Foodland Maika’i card.
Anyone with a maika’i membership card who shops at Foodland in the month
of September will be able to donate monies to the Band Boosters directly and
Foodland will match a percentage of the donation and give to the boosters as
well. To donate, they need the school code (78945). If you forget the code,
it’s on the Kawananakoa Band Booster Club Banner in the School Street Foodland.
