LEX BRODIE “THANK YOU VERY MUCH” AWARD goes to JESSICA LUU (7th Grade)!

This program invites students in grades 4-12 to submit a letter describing their appreciation of someone who impacted their life. Jessica was encouraged to enter the contest by her teacher, Mr. Reed, and she wrote a very heartwarming, eloquent and winning  letter to her mother. Jessica will be recognized with numerous prizes including:  Ala Moana gift certificate, two-night stay at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Hotel, $500 grant to the KMS science department, Oceanography Science trip to Coconut Island for 40 students, a trophy and a donation to a charity of her choice.Congratulations Jessica!

 4th QUARTER REPORT CARDS will be mailed to each student’s home address during the second week in June.  If your child has had a change of home address, please contact our main office at (808)307-0300 as soon as possible or email our registrar at aric_oumi@notes.k12.hi.us.

 

PTSA CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION –  Mahalo to our many volunteers!

Thank you again to the many students, parents and school faculty/staff who gave up their Saturday to help paint and clean our school campus.  The fresh coat of yellow and red really brightens the campus and shows our school pride! Special thanks to PTSA VP Programs, Mrs. Wendy Kondo, for organizing another great Campus Beautification.

We will  be selling the D&B PowerCard lei on the morning of the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony, Thursday, May 30 from 8:00 to 8:45 am. Look for the PTSA banner.

– Dry-Fit T-Shirt The PTSA dry-fit t-shirt is an approved alternative to the cotton KMS t-shirts uniforms that are available for purchase  through Unlimited Designs. PTSA will also be at the Student Prep Days (7/18 and 7/19) to take orders and payments.  Sample dry-fit t-shirts will be available for your inspection. Please note that these dry-fit t-shirts when ordered and paid for in full, will be distributed to your childʻs AA class in mid-September.  Order now for next school year.

KMS e-WASTE/RECYCLE COLLECTION
Mahalo to Rene Mansho and her network of community sponsors for bringingGoing Green Day to our school. Special thanks to the KMS faculty/staff volunteers: Principal Victor, VP Sugano, Ms. Arzadon, Mr. Arzadon, Ms. Ayabe & family, Mr. Chang, Ms. Fujise, Mr. G. Lum, Mr. Mew, Mr. Oumi & family, Mr. Reed, Mr. Soriano, Ms. Togashi,and Ms. Wee.  Our volunteers worked hard in the hot sun, and  were able to fill three flatbed trucks with tons of eWaste, bags of clothing and housewares, car batteries, and recyclables! Community members expressed gratitude and appreciation for this drop-off service.

8th GRADE PROMOTION REMINDERS – Thursday, May 30

Here are some tips to help make Promotion Day run smoothly:

  • The school cafeteria will be open parents at 8:00 am so that you can sit and wait until the auditorium doors open at 8:45 am. Please do not wait in other areas of the campus or around the auditorium as this can be disruptive to our 6th and 7th grade classes who are in session.
  • Limited parking will be available on campus.  Additional parking will be available atMyohoji Mission (2003 Nuuanu Avenue) and Soto Mission (1708 Nuuanu Avenue).
  • All participating students will be give TWO (2) tickets (distributed to them on May 29)for their guests.  Only those people with a ticket (this includes infants and toddlers)   will be allowed to enter the auditorium.
  • For everyone’s safety and comfort, balloons, strollers, air horns, and large banners  are not allowed at the Promotion Ceremony.
  • Please contact the school at (808) 307-0300 if you require handicap seating.

ALL STUDENTS – LOCKERS MUST BE CLEARED BY THURSDAY, MAY 30

Please remove locks and clear all items out of your student locker.  If the locker is not cleared by end of day on Thursday, May 30, our school security will cut the lock and confiscate all items in the locker. Students who are returning to KMS next year will be assigned a new locker

during Student Prep Day.

ROOSEVELT HS VOLLEYBALL WORKOUTS – Starts Saturday, June 1 

Current 8th graders who are going on to Roosevelt HS next year and are interested in playing volleyball, please attend the RHS volleyball workouts  every Saturday, starting June 1 from 9:00 am to 11:30 am in the RHS gym. If you have any questions please leave a message for Ms. Wee at the KMS main office (808)307-0300.

 KMS UNIFORM T-SHIRT DONATIONS

Has your student outgrown their KMS t-shirt or has no use for them after this school year as they move on to high school?  Please bring gently used and laundered KMS t-shirt uniforms to the school main office to be used as loaner uniforms for students who need them.  We especially need medium and large shirts.

SUMMER SCHOOL ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION

Registration for KMS Summer School is closed. Notification of acceptance to KMS Summer School was e-mailed to parents and a hard copy was also be distributed to students in their AA class on Friday, May 25.  The notification  includes a class schedule and class supplies list.  First day of instruction is Wednesday, June 12. Please note that the KMS cafeteria will not be serving meals during the summer session. Summer school students are advised to bring a home lunch/snack.

IMPORTANT HEALTH REMINDERS – Make your physical exam appointment NOW!

  • 7th Grade (current) Physical Exam – A letter from the Dept of Education andDept of Health was mailed to the homes of all current 7th graders who have not yet submitted documentation of a physical examination this school year. If you need a copy of the letter and the physical exam form, please open the attachment below.
  • 7th Grade Px.pdf6th Grade (current) Physical Exam – In preparation for entering 7th grade next school year, please open and read the attached information regarding the required physical exam.  Parents are encouraged to plan ahead and schedule your child’s well-child visit with your family physician.

BRAT FREE DRESS DAY – Friday, May 31

Congratulations to all students with no Behavior Referral, Absences, or Tardies during the month of May.  These students will be awarded a free dress sticker which must be placed on the back of their ID card. Free dress day students are not required to wear their KMS uniform t-shirt, butmust still comply with the KMS dress code (see page 15 of the Student Planner). Again, congratulations and thank you for displaying good behavior and perfect attendance.

Ms. Ishida would like to thank the families of Tiana Lagundimao, Chloe, Harley, and Stephanie Lee, Sara Li and Sinjin Unabia for their donations of fabric remnants which will be used in the summer school arts and crafts class. Mahalo again for supporting our teachers!

Ms. Victor (Principal) – “Our students accomplished so much this year – thank you KMS ohana for supporting them.  Summer is just around the corner – have a safe and happy one!”

Ms. Izumoto (English) – “I would like to thank the KMS students and families for the best teaching year of my career!  I love you all and look forward to another brilliant year next year.  Have a wonderful summer.”

Ms. Shaw (Math) – “First, I am going to Italy with Honolulu Chorale and perform from Rome to Venice during our trip. When I return, I will go to Houston for NEA as Hawaii State Teacher delegate. Besides travel, I will attend five days curriculum training and one day school leader training and one day inclusion training. I heard it will be super hot for the coming two months. Wish all the staffs and teachers a safe and relaxing summer vacation.”

Mr. Fernandez (Security) – “It was another great year! Everyone have a safe and fun summer. Aloha to our 8th graders – enjoy high school.”

Mr. Guy Lum (Band) – “Thank you to all the supporters of Kawananakoa Middle School and  the band program. To the parents who gave us a moment of your time to help us, THANK YOU so much for helping. From planning events to participating in any events as a volunteer. We hope that your support continues through the years to come. To the parents who are thinking of joining our Booster organization, please urge your fellow parents in the band program to join us in making the experience for your children the best experience possible. Thank you to the students during my first year as a teacher at KMS. Your kindness shows me that we have great PEOPLE here at KMS. And last but not least, thank you to the administrative staff, and KMS Faculty for everything you have done to support the band program and to support a fresh teacher in his first year. Have a wonderful break, and a hui hou!”
